Paul Castles

Paul is a composer whose music reconjures how stories are told through live, experiential, and digital performance.

He is one of the originators of Repast, a sensory interactive experience that explores the interconnectedness of nature and memory (produced by Wldr, premiere at Light Adelaide and Illuminate). He is also developing the The Percipients with Sibyl Kempson and 7 Daughters of Eve and his dance musical The Road Between the Desert and the Ocean with Mkhululi Mabija in 2024.

His previous projects include the live music score for Wild Goose Dreams by Hansol Jung, which was nominated for a Drama Desk for Outstanding Music and produced by the Public Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, and Theatre Royal Bath. He was composer of The Fountain with Namoo Chae Lee which won Best New Work at the 6th Daegu International Musical Theatre Festival. He also co-created HERE, a multidisciplinary arts project with poet Nicole W. Lee. Other performances and productions include the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, International Festival for the Centenary of Strindberg, Clare Cook Dance Theatre, Victorian Opera, Alicia Crossley, Gamagol Theatre, and the Clock Ensemble.

Paul has been an artist-in-residence at UKARIA Cultural Centre and a fellow at the Sundance Institute, Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study, Centre for Ballet and the Arts, Yaddo, Composer/Librettist Studio at New Dramatists, Old Vic Lab, New Opera Ventures (NOVA), and the Cybec 21st Century Young Composers Program.
